WALKING WHILE BLACK

Lead Video Editor and Colorist, Feature Documentary

This documentary, “Walking While Black - L.O.V.E. is the Answer”, exposes racial profiling in policing in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death in Baltimore, interviewing an array of law enforcement and prominent community leaders to weigh potential solutions. As the lead editor, I scanned all 90+ hours of footage, flagged every fruitful statement and built an honest look at the problems and solutions around police discrimination.

Jameel "Zookie" McGee and Andrew Collins discuss how they met. Jameel, in the car about to go see his newborn son for the first time and Andrew, a police officer looking for drug offenders. A clip from "Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer" by AJ Ali. Edit and Color by Lydia Hall.

“Tears came to my eyes because I said to my self, “In the 21st century it’s still hard for somebody to believe that here I am, African American male, that somebody would question to that level, to where they had to check my creds, look at them, turn them upside and down to make sure that they were authentic.” I realized at that point right there, I don’t care that I’ve graduated from Quantico, I don’t care that I’m educated, I don’t care that I’ve traveled the world, I don’t care that you serve as a Special Agent, 1811, at the end of the day - you’re still black.” - Bobby Kimbrough, Sheriff in NC, Former US Special Agent, DOJ

“So I said to the remaining Commanders and the three Deputy Commissioners, “Listen I take offense to this warrior/guardian [comment]. Not one of ya’ll in this room has had more arrests than me, gotten shot at more than me or has contracts on your life as much as me, … so don’t you ever think that I’m not a warrior! I’m more warrior than anybody in this room! And just because I’m also a guardian and I’m balanced, don’t you ever think you’re looking at a soft dude!” - Melvin Russell, Retired Deputy Commissioner and Chief of Community Partnership for Baltimore PD

“Fear, anger, fear of the other, driving our culture, driving our politics, driving a sense of “supremacy” some folks have, belief that they are better, holier than others. We have got to right that wrong.” - Gavin Newsom, Governor of California

“And so I thought that, as the supervisor, my job was to make sure that my officers were good who were there and saw this, because when he jumped, he didn’t die. He probably wished he had, but to see him and hear what that sounds like when someone hits a pavement several stories up and live through it - was troubling, for me. … And we had some psychologists come down and by the time they got to the division, none of my male officers wanted to talk, they were “I’m good Sarge. No worries.” I looked at that young man and I had a son about his age. And I didn’t know for how it would bother me but I thought, well let me just have a few words with somebody about this to make sure that I’m in a good place and I didn’t see any harm or any shame in doing that.” - Cheryl Dorsey, Retired LAPD Sargent, Author

GRANITE RAPIDS MOON

Colorist, Feature Film

In this feature film, John backpacks through the Grand Canyon in hazardous winter conditions to try to find peace with a decision from his past before it unravels his future. Winter scenes needed to be color graded cool and consistent, especially in the rust-colored environment of the Grand Canyon, and flashbacks to summertime needed to be warm, but dreamlike.
